Business development managers: aligning companies strategically

Business development managers deal with challenging as well as exciting tasks such as conducting market analyses and developing existing business areas and new markets. Due to increasing international competition, business development managers are highly sought-after in many sectors to help ensure the successful positioning of companies in the future.

Which opportunities do business development managers have on the labour market?

Business development managers can work in almost every industry. However, in industries with a high demand for innovation, e.g. in scientific and technical areas, they are especially sought-after. Business development managers have particularly good career prospects in telecommunications and IT, in the pharmaceutical industry and in biotechnology, but also in mechanical engineering and related areas.

What are the tasks and responsibilities of business development managers?

Analysing, drawing conclusions, developing strategies – this describes the main tasks of business development managers in a few words. Based on continuous analyses, business development managers optimise existing corporate strategies and design new ones. They are also responsible for improving the company's operational performance and keep an eye on the potential of other companies, external specialists and the company’s own employees and resources in this context. Another important task is the initiation of contacts with potential customers or partners, as this is the only way to realise innovative strategies.

  • Design and implementation of new strategies in marketing, sales and customer service
  • Development of new markets, customer groups and partners
  • Market and competitor analyses
  • Communication with (potential) customers and partners
  • Exchange and cooperation with the development department
  • Training of employees with regard to new strategic targets
  • Participation in trade fairs and conferences

Which hard skills and soft skills should business development managers have?

There is no specific education or training, but a degree in economics or marketing is beneficial, together with professional experience in the relevant industry. Business development managers should be able to work in a responsible, independent way and under pressure. They should have an analytical way of thinking, great team spirit and strong communication skills. Experience abroad as well as foreign language skills are a clear asset in a globalised working environment.

  • Studies in economics, marketing or a similar field of study
  • Professional experience in sales, marketing and development
  • Comprehensive IT skills
  • Good communication skills and team spirit
  • Foreign language skills and – ideally – international experience
  • A proactive, responsible way of working, even under pressure

What is the average salary of business development managers?

The gross annual salary of business development managers varies between EUR 45,000 and EUR 80,000, depending on the industry, the professional experience and the size of the company.
