Assistant medical directors – responsible for hospital departments & employees

In the specialist departments of hospitals, assistant medical directors play an important role, working in close collaboration with chief physicians, assistant physicians and specialist physicians. Assistant medical directors have the medical responsibility for parts of a clinic or a department. If they are permanent representatives of the chief physician, their remuneration is accordingly higher.

Which opportunities do assistant medical directors have on the labour market?

Since there has been a shortage of medical specialists in Germany for many years already, the demand for assistant medical directors is very high. Positions for assistant medical directors often remain vacant for more than a year in many specialist areas. In 2018, physicians specialising in gastroenterology were in particularly high demand, followed by specialists for pneumology, vascular surgery and psychosomatic medicine.

What are the tasks and responsibilities of assistant medical directors?

Assistant medical directors are usually responsible for one or several hospital wards. They have medical and organisational duties such as the examination and treatment of and the provision of advice to patients as well as managerial tasks.

  • They manage the medical care of the patients, perform organisational activities and delegate tasks.
  • They are responsible for the management of assistant physicians and other medical employees.
  • Besides, they evaluate X-ray images and measured data.
  • In a senior function, they may also be responsible for the permanent representation of the chief physician.
  • Chief residents perform the tasks of assistant medical directors, but do not hold a permanent post.

Assistant medical directors have completed their studies in human medicine followed by a training to become medical specialists. A habilitation is required to work in this position at university hospitals. Assistant medical directors have to cope with long working hours, on-call duty and night shifts.

What is the average salary of assistant medical directors?

The average annual gross salary of assistant medical directors is between EUR 100,000 and EUR 130,000. It is higher than the salary of medical specialists and lower than the salary of chief physicians. In most cases, assistant medical directors are paid in accordance with the collective agreement, while the scale depends on the duration of their employment. In university hospitals, the monthly gross salary at level 1 (1st year) is about EUR 7,500, at level 2 (4th year) about EUR 8,100 and at level 3 (7th year) about EUR 8,800. According to the relevant collective agreement, the monthly salary is about EUR 400 lower at municipal hospitals.
