Which opportunities do group accountants have on the labour market?

Group accountants with an academic degree in economics and/or a balance sheet accountant's qualification have good prospects on the job market. Several years of professional experience at an auditing or tax consulting company or in the consolidation area of an industrial company is an advantage.

Excellent knowledge of IFRS, the German Commercial Code (HGB) and MS Office as well as fluent oral and writing skills in English also further increase their chances.

Whether full-time or part-time, the job opportunities for corporate accountants are promising, especially in large cities such as Berlin or the conurbations in North Rhine-Westphalia.

What are the tasks and responsibilities of group accountants?

Group accountants are responsible for the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements according to HGB and IFRS and, at certain companies, also for the support of the subsidiaries abroad. In addition, they monitor and coordinate the individual budgets and are in charge of financial planning.

In summary, this means:

  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual statements of various companies and of consolidated financial statements
  • Execution of various consolidation steps
  • Acting as contact persons for specialist departments and (foreign) subsidiaries
  • Responsible for special topics/projects in the finance area
  • Dealing with tax-related questions in cooperation with tax consultants or financial authorities
  • Active involvement in the continuous optimisation of corporate financial processes

Which hard skills and soft skills should group accountants have?

Group accountants require an academic degree in business administration or economics or a similar qualification with specialisation in finance and accounting/taxation. Sound knowledge of HGB and IFRS is essential as well.

  • Business fluent German and English skills
  • Intercultural competence
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office
  • Willingness to travel
  • A high level of personal responsibility and commitment
  • Results orientation, flexibility and team spirit
  • Deep commercial understanding
  • Analytical skills and an affinity for numbers

The salary of a group accountant can vary depending on the industry, location and experience. In Germany, the average gross annual salary for this position (with a permanent position) is between 60,000 and 80,000 euros, whereby a junior group accountant naturally earns less than a senior group accountant. Additional factors such as bonuses also influence the accountant's salary, sometimes considerably.
