IT technician (m/f/d)

IT technicians always have a solution at the ready for office system technology and device and system technology because of their work. They develop information technology solutions for companies in accordance with requirements across all industries, and are responsible for installation, maintenance and repairs. The hardware and software which is provided in this way is tailored to the working procedures of a wide variety of companies. The everyday work of IT technicians also includes post-setup support such as troubleshooting and repairs to the technology. They also carry out special training courses for the employees for the use of the hardware and software.

The remit of IT technicians can extend far beyond the administrative part, and can also include the development of software or the management of databases. Deployment in the areas of process automation technology or in multimedia information management is therefore also feasible.

IT technicians develop and install computer systems and networks for companies and train the users in the use of the systems which they have developed. In so doing, not only does their knowledge of computer software and hardware come into play, but also their knowledge of a wide range of Internet applications, networks and operating systems. IT technicians are also responsible for troubleshooting. IT technicians succeed in shaping IT operations within the company in as sustainable a way as possible through their work.

The information technology area is becoming a continuously expanding sector in companies during the course of digitalisation. There are few other industries in which more workplaces are available and appropriate specialists are required. As an IT specialist, you shape the digital progress of a wide variety of companies by writing new programs, making processes more efficient and finding creative solutions.

In order to find hardware and software solutions, train personnel and be a contact for problem rectification, IT technicians are entrusted with the following tasks in their everyday work:

• Adviser function
• Procurement, set-up, installation and maintenance of devices and systems
• Testing of computer hardware (HDD, mice, keyboards etc.) in order to ensure that they are functional
• Problem rectification and device repair
• Processing of problem cases and the development of solutions in accordance with requirements
• Development and maintenance of local networks for optimising performance
• Guaranteeing the reliability and the private sphere of networks and computer systems
• Conducting training

IT technicians start their job with a gross monthly salary of approximately EUR 3,000. IT technicians in Germany have a gross annual salary of about EUR 42,000 on average. This gross annual salary can increase to about EUR 55,000 per annum for experienced specialists.

Excellent knowledge of the hardware and software of all of the most popular manufacturers is an absolute must for working as an IT specialist. You should also have industry-specific IT skills in order to be able to offer and implement optimum solution systems. Good German and English language skills are important for customer discussions and the training courses that you run. Since the installation, maintenance and repair of the hardware and software is carried out on site within the companies, a driver’s licence is usually essential.

Technical training, an IT degree or re-training in the IT area is important for starting a job as an IT technician. The training to become an IT technician can be completed within one and a half to two years by means of further education at a technical college. This further education is officially known as “Staatlich geprüfter Techniker Fachrichtung Informatik” (State-tested technician specialising in information technology). The participants specialise in the main areas of corporate IT, networking technology and/or technical IT when doing this. The training also be carried out as a correspondence course.
