What is an auditor?
Meaning and overview

An auditor analyses internal company processes and uncovers potential for optimisation. They interview employees, analyse relevant data and check documents. Auditors always keep an eye on the operational requirements and technical standards that need to be met. In short, they are responsible for optimising structures and workflows in a company and check whether processes and systems are compliant.

Auditors can work both internally and externally. Internal auditors check processes and quality within their organisation, while external auditors are sent out by consulting companies to examine specific features in other companies.

What does audit mean?

Audit means examination and describes the "product" of an auditor. Audits aim to examine and evaluate processes or systems in organisations.

Companies can identify potential for improvement through a systematic approach and comprehensive investigations and documentation. All these steps are part of an audit, which is carried out by a trained auditor and then made available to the company. Audits can be carried out in many different business areas.
