In their training, technical product designers can choose between specialising in "Product design and construction" or "Machine and system construction". In the training as a technical product designer specializing in "Product design and construction", the main focus is on the costs, the design and the technical possibilities of materials, standards and assembly techniques for 3D models. In contrast to this, the "Machine and system construction" specialization focuses on the design of 3-D models of components and assemblies for vehicles, machinery and plants. The essential basics of control and electrical engineering are taught when doing this.

The training is divided between the company and the vocational school, and usually lasts for 3.5 years. During this time, the foundations are laid for starting your career as a technical product designer.

Technical product designers often work in development and construction departments of industrial companies and implement construction diagrams in such a way that the object can be manufactured with millimetre precision. When doing this, they let their knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods flow into the process as well as their feel for good design. At the same time, they have an overview of the required work steps, materials and costs that arise during production. And if things get tricky at any point, they can provide practical solution approaches thanks to their creative way of thinking.
